Key aspects of after-surgery home care in Chicago:
- Safety
- Comfort
- Healing
- Independence
The after-surgery home care that we provide is focused on your individual needs, with attention to maintaining safety and comfort and promoting healing and independence. We will monitor the healing process, assessing for symptoms of discomfort, infection, digestive or elimination problems. Wound care and dressing changes are performed or delegated to our trained caregivers by our Care Manager. An invasive surgical procedure is traumatic to the body. If chronic illnesses exist prior to surgery, the impact is greater. Coupled with advanced age; these factors can make post-operative recovery a challenge requiring ongoing assessment and intervention.
Contributing factors of post-surgery in addition to the physical trauma include disrupted daily routines, loss of function due to limited physical movement immediately following procedure, increased risk of infection, exacerbation of existing chronic conditions, and post-operative cognitive changes. Digestive, urinary and elimination functions may be slowed or altered due to medication, the surgical procedure or decreased physical activity immediately post op.
Specialized post-operative home health care for people who have undergone surgery includes:
Vital sign and wound site monitoring if indicated.
Wound care as necessary by nurse or delegated to caregiver when appropriate.
Monitoring comfort with medication prompt, assistance or delegated administration if necessary.
Supervised, planned activity to increase strength, endurance and return activities to pre-operative levels while maintaining physical safety.
Preparation and serving nutritious meals; offering fluids frequently to promote healing.
Observe for nausea or vomiting.
Monitoring of bladder and bowel function during post op period.
Frequent inspection of skin during bedbound phase.
